Note to
athletes: Why 18K and 31.25K distances in 2008? The Birch Bay
15K course is US Track and Field Certified and the 30K GPS
measured 6 times to within 25 meters. If you review the course
maps you will notice that the southern end of the course is an
out and back into Birch Bay State Park – with a turn around at
the aid station (#2)The left turn into the park had flaggers
assigned to it and was to be marked. At approximately 8:48, the
lead runners got to the turn before flaggers and signage were in
place and the athletes naturally continued on and everyone
followed. I caught up with the lead runners who were well into
the loop around Point Whitehorn. I made the decision at that
moment to go ahead of the lead runners and continue the loop to
Jackson, and then back into the park. This was to ensure that
all runners were able to race the same course, be protected by
flaggers on a safe course and get back to aid stations,
port-o-potties. The loop resulted in exactly 3K additional.
For the 30K we had enough time to eliminate a 1.75K out and
back. We have measured the additional mileage and all paces
have been adjusted accordingly. Everybody raced the same
course. My deep apologies to athletes for any consternation
created by the longer course. Sincerely, Jon Hoskins, Race
